It's the Little Things....

How many times have we heard versions of this platitude:  "Little things mean a lot"; "It's the little things that make life worthwhile"; or this wonderful quote from Andy Warhol: "You need to let the little things that would ordinarily bore you suddenly thrill you."  Truer words have never been spoken, and should be the tagline for this blog.  :D

Take these pre-packaged price tags for various deli meats!  I love them, even though most non-Ephemeraology people would take one look and say either "GROSS!", or "Wow. Those are old, huh?".

Oh, but not me (or you, I suspect)!  These labels do indeed thrill me.  How could they not?  Take a look at these babies!  They have everything - Day-Glo (yet faded) colors not found on Planet Earth and certainly not in regular meats; that beautiful Meat Department weight/pricing spot with (GASP!) a cents sign; the "Pre-packaged for your Convenience" announcement; and, of course, the fabulous subject matter.  My favorites are a toss-up between the mock chicken loaf and the liver loaf.  Forty years ago, I think people ate "loaves" of things a lot more than they do today.  I love everything except tuna in a can and lima beans, but I think even I would have a hard time with the "mock" chicken loaf.  First of all, I would imagine that "loaf" has to be exploding with sodium.  Secondly, what makes it "mock"?  Is it chicken, or isn't it?  And if it's not, then what pray tell is it?  This is long before the days of tofu, so it kind of scares me.  :D

Nevertheless, I ADORE these labels.  They hearken to a time when people ate differently.  It all seems so innocent, these nitrite-laden meats.  How come it seems like the people who ate these things, AND smoked, lived to be octogenarians, like my dad?  Did they worry less?  Were they more grounded?

Yes, these are the things I think about when I see vintage deli meat labels.  Yes, I get sociological with my ephemera.  And yes, I do get nostalgic for mock chicken loaf.  :D

I will ABSOLUTELY be using these labels somehow - and let's not forget this awesome postcard of a meat counter!  That will probably anchor the collage. It's all too wonderful. See?  It's the little things.  :D

Before I go, I want to remind you that if you haven't signed up for the AWESOME 100K Giveaway, DO SO NOW!  I'm drawing a name TODAY at 5 p.m. CST!  So far we've got 25 people entered, which is great - them's good odds for any of you, though!  Good luck, and thanks for playing along!  :D

  1. I grew up with pickle pimento loaf and oh how I dreaded it, but love these labels! Life was so much simpler when we didn't know everything would hurt us and most everyone used moderation anyway! I love your blog because of the memories you always bring back for me!!!! Mock chicken loaf I've never seen and that one scares me too!!

  4. By the way, Mel, I can't add your blog to Google, either Reader or the Blogger dashboard - they both (or Google) refuse to admit that your URL is correct.

Which is why I'm resorting to daily emails.

The internet is a weird, wonderful and sometimes very frustrating place, sigh...
