The Detritus Project Begins!

The "Library as Incubator Project" logo designed by Rebecca Light.

WOWIE!!!  My first blog post as a guest of Library as Incubator Project hits the site today!  I am THRILLED!

You may recall me talking about Library as Incubator Project before - I have been their guest artist; I created a "kit" for their Resources page; and I've curated a Pinterest board of collage books for their IArtLibraries Pinterest account.

Before I proceed, allow me to explain a little further what the Library as Incubator Project is all about.  Actually, I will just reiterate their mission statement:  "The mission of the Library as Incubator Project is to promote and facilitate creative collaboration between libraries and artists of all types, and to advocate for libraries as incubators of the arts."

It's such a brilliant idea, and one that our town is putting into action!  Some of you may know that I, along with five other artists (including my husby Brian), founded Fond du Lac Visual Arts in 2010.  When the Fond du Lac Arts Council was trying to find a place where we could curate and showcase our work, they collaborated with our Fond du Lac Public Library, and our group, under the tutelage of our fellow founding member Suze Fiebig, began curating the Langdon Divers Gallery, located in our library.  We have a different exhibit every month.  Most feature FDLVA artists in one form or another, but some exhibits are community projects and some feature kids' art.  The community has responded very favorably to our shows!

Because we're living the LAIP's idea, I contacted Laura Damon-Moore, one of the three women who initiated this wonderful site.  I didn't really know what to expect, or if I'd even get a response.  I was so pleasantly surprised to find that not only did I receive a reply in a matter of hours, but Ms. Damon-Moore was extremely enthusiastic that I'd want to be a featured artist and she had a few more ideas for me as well!

Because of our discourse and her infectious enthusiasm, I started thinking of all the ways artists and libraries could work together.  Because I'm an Ephemeraologist, I began narrowing those thoughts into a project I could do to highlight the ephemera that exists in libraries.

VOILA!!!  The Detritus Project was born!  After I'd contacted our FDLPL Community Resources Coordinator Terri Fleming and got the okay, I told Laura my idea.  She was all for it!  My guest blogging stint was a go!

Have I piqued your interest?  I hope so!  Head on over to Library as Incubator Project to find out more about the project!  I'll be blogging once every two weeks until June 5, so be sure to bookmark the site (I'll be sending out reminders, too).

I am so glad I discovered these wonderful women and this amazing, ideas-laden Web site.  Their work may just change the way we interact with our libraries in the future!
