Clever, or Annoying?

Here's a tiny sampling of ephemera that arrived on a banana a while back.  I kept it because I've been trying to decide how I feel about it.

If you've been reading this blog since the beginning, you may recall that I wrote an entire post about my love of fruit stickers.  I do love them - they're tiny works of art!  Lately, though, most times you just see a bar code and a miniscule logo.  They're not as fun as they used to be.

Along comes this fruit sticker.  It's certainly fun and colorful, but.....

It's advertising something else.

This may be where the annoying part comes in.  One may argue that advertising is becoming so pervasive in this culture that we can't even get away from it on our fruit.  We're used to the advertising of the fruits' own branding, like Dole, but to have them shill for a movie - is it out of bounds?  If you notice, there's also a QR code to direct you to ringtones!  I think I'm the last person on Earth who doesn't own a smartphone, but if I did own one I certainly wouldn't be using it for this purpose.  :D

On the other hand, you may find this totally clever!  Bananas are "kid-friendly", like peanut butter and jelly.  Maybe it's marketing genius to advertise the new "Chipmunks" movie on the fruit sticker.  Maybe some kid took that fruit label and stuck it on his notebook, thereby allowing his classmates to also see the sticker without even purchasing the fruit.  The sticker may have started kids talking about the movie and downloading those ringtones - BINGO!  Marketing cycle complete.

And maybe it has already worked on me as well! I certainly won't see the movie - not really my thing.  But I'm writing about it, aren't I?  And I saved the sticker, didn't I?

Twenty years from now, when I take a good long look at my Perpetual Ephemera Depository, I'll look back on this sticker and smile, probably because at that point fruit stickers will be a forgotten relic (the move is already underway to use food-safe inked bar codes right on the fruit).  We'll revisit the sticker then - so look for a post about it in 2032.  I'll be here, waiting for your take on it!  :D

  1. First off, Bananas. I heard on CNN, that in 10 years from now, Banana's will become extinct!!! Only genetically grown will exist, due to climate changes, and such. So 20 years from now, when you look at all the Fabulous labels you have, they will be priceless!!! I do not like the new codes that they're putting on everything for the gadgets to buy from one's couch! I think it ruins the advertising art which I do occasionally enjoy. I long for the art that used to be on the wooded cases of fruit. That kept many an artist in work during rough times! Maybe we'll see a resurgence!!!! Cheers!

    1. A ha ha ha - well, Denise, I tend to take the news with a grain of salt. At one point "they" also said coffee caused cancer! :D But I do think that these QR codes are going to look hysterically outdated in about 15 years, just like the "information superhighway" sounds so silly now. :D
