School Daze

Happy September, everyone!  Can you believe it?  I say this every year but I can't believe that summer is gone already.  It always goes by so fast.  And I'm not even really a fan of summer!  Bring on the fall, I say (to my Australian and other Southern Hemisphere friends - happy almost Spring to you!).

One of the (many) reasons I think Jewish culture is so cool is the celebration of Rosh Hashanah, or the Jewish New Year.  I think the new year should start in September for all of us!  A new year means new beginnings, new adventures, new possibilities, new risks.....

And isn't that what a new school year is about?  I never worried about the first day of school, but I know many who did.  I looked forward to all the "new" - new classroom, new teacher, new school supplies, new cute boys in my class..  :D

I happened to find this Mead tablet (there's a word you don't hear often anymore - "tablet"!) at our inadvertently vintage office supply store here in Fondy (they aren't trying to be vintage but their stock is SO old that it's a gold mine for me!).  Isn't it AWESOME??  Is there anyone out there who remembers this relic?  It was ubiquitous to me growing up.  I snagged a couple in case my sister wanted to relive 5th grade too.  :D

And how about this "Co-ed" magazine?  I got it in one of the grab bags that I bought at Kim Geiser's booth at CREATE! (one of the perks is that I made a pile before anyone else got there!).  I had no idea it was in there; hence, the "grab bag" idea - but I love it because it's from September of '63, which is the fall that my mom entered her senior year in high school.  I love reading it and wondering if she ever did too - I'll have to ask her!

I love making school-related art, too!  It seems to strike a chord with many people.  I'm sure it's the nostalgia factor taking hold, but there is something so magical about this time of year.

Happy New (School) Year, everyone!  :D
